According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. At the present time, 18% (or almost one in five) children, aged 6-19 in the United States are obese. The really neat thing is that the 100 Mile Club® has a low-cost solution to this problem.
I have personally attended the medal ceremonies at two schools now (held at the end of the school year). The kids are just beaming as they receive their gold medal for completing of 100 miles. And the parents are there jockeying for position to take a photo of their son or daughter. It is really touching to see and life changing for the kids. Here's the kicker: it only costs $10 a year per kid to fund the program. Some of these elementary kids are logging over 300 miles! With the running, comes confidence, self-esteem and so many other things.
The 100 Mile Club® is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose focus is addressing childhood “inactivity” one child at a time. Those kids that join have the goal of running (or walking) 100 miles at school during a single school year. The 100 Mile Club® has grown to serve over 600 schools in all 50 states.
While it only costs $10 to cover the cost of this program for one child for the entire year, some families can’t swing it (especially if they have a large family). Please support me by making a donation. Any amount will help.
