Newfoundland & Labrador is the eastern-most Canadian province and the eastern-most destination in North America. Canadian hospitality abounds in this area making it a great vacation destination.
Ironman 70.3 Newfoundland is part of the World Triathlon Corporation's rapidly growing 70.3 series, all culminating in the [Ironman 70.3 World Championships] in Clearwater, Florida. The Newfoundland race boasts 50 qualification slots for the Florida championship race.
The Newfoundland 70.3 course takes place in the Humber River Valley Region. The swim takes place in a pristine fresh water lake, the bike ride is fairly challenging, bring riders on a magnificent tour of the forested mountains of the Humber River region before running along the tranquil shores of Deer Lake.
The race location is not too difficult to reach, with direct flights to Newfoundland through both the Toronto and Montreal airports. The weather for the race is usually fairly mild, with lows in the mid-50s (F) and average highs in the 70s.
Like all 70.3 / Half Ironman races, the event distances are:
* SWIM: 1.2 miles
* BIKE: 56 miles
* RUN: 13.1 miles
SWIM
distance: 1.2 miles
The swim starts at Pasadena Beach Park on the shores of Deer Lake (click here for a map of Pasadena). This is a fresh water swim in crystal clear water. Water temperature are usually in the mid-60s (approx. 19 degrees Celsius). It is a wetsuit legal race.
BIKE
distance: 56 miles
The bike is a two loop course that travels along the Trans Canada Highway and the scenic Humber River Valley region, flanked by forest on both sides. The bike course is fairly challenging. Amidst the continuously rolling hills are two significant 4km climbs at miles 15 and 40, the top of which is a turnaround back towards transition.
RUN
distance: 13.1 miles
Leaving T2 at Pasadena Beach, athletes run west on the Trans Canada Highway to the Humber Valley Resort along the shoreline of Deer Lake. It is a relatively flat run course, allowing for fast splits.
