March Madness is a sprint adventure race (4-6 hour event) put on by Infiterra Sports. Like their December Chill event, March Madness is designed to be a fun fast course that provides a wonderful experience for both beginners and veterans.
The course will be nice and short with finish times from only 4 to 6 hours. The unpredictable March weather can bring an additional challenge to the event as the day can bring either snow, 50 degree weather or anything in between.
Teams can be created in one of four divisions:
* 2 person coed
* 2 person male
* 2 person female
* solo
No support crew is needed for this logistically simple sprint adventure race. Teams will be required to navigate each stage of the race using provided pre-marked topographical maps. Navigation difficulty will vary by control point, but will be on the easy side for the majority of the event.
Each team will be issued a passport that will be punched at designated control points along the way.
The disciplines for the race involve:
* Mountain Biking
* Orienteering
* Trekking
* Fixed Ropes
(due to the early season timing of the race there will not be a canoe section)
Racer Check In Information & Directions
The start and finish will take place at the Heron Lake Parking Lot in Holly Rec Area (click here for a map).
Trekking / Trail Running / Orienteering
The total on foot will be between 4 - 10 miles - more depending on the selected route. The terrain will vary from trails to dense brush. However, with the winter season, you can expect the forest to be mostly open. You will of course see Infiterra's standard O-course style orienteering in the event. Navigation will be on pre-marked 1:24,000 scale maps.
Mountain Bike
The mountain bike stage(s) will be fast and fun at 8-14 miles in length. Teams must locate and check in at each of the required checkpoints. The course will include a combination of single track, dirt and paved roads.
Fixed Ropes
There will be one fixed ropes section. It will be a fun zip line. All equipment will be provided for ropes sections. No special certificates or skill will be required. It will be designed for you to have fun!
