The Oakridge 24 Hour Adventure Race takes place in and around Oakridge, Oregon (about 1 hour south east of Eugene). Oakridge is in the heart of the Willamette National Forest with access to whitewater rivers, flat water rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and hundreds of miles of trails and fire roads.
Participants, in teams of one, two, three or four, will spend 24 hours kayaking, mountain biking, traveling on foot and navigating through a variety of different terrain. The event is for experienced adventure racers. At least one team member must have navigation skills to plot UTM's and use a map and compass (taking bearings, identifying features on a topographic map). All participants must have the ability to kayak over 15 miles on open water and to self rescue, if necessary.
The Oakridge 24 Hour Adventure Race is part of Seventh Wave Productions' esteemed Big Blue Adventure Series, which also features the Kit Carson 24 Hour Adventure Race among other shorter distance events.
KAYAKING
Participants will kayak over 15 miles.
ORIENTEERING
The race provides teams with Topographic maps that describe the shape of the land. They define and locate natural and manmade features (forests, creeks, rivers, canyons, buildings, bridges.) They show the distance between any two places, and they also show the direction from one point to another. Distances and directions take a bit of figuring, but the topography and features of the land are easy to determine. The topography is shown by contours. These are imaginary lines that follow the ground surface at a constant elevation; and can provide information on the natural form of the land around you. Throughout the Big Blue Series you will navigate from place to place on land and water using topographic and other map forms and of course a compass.
Navigation skills incorporated into the race:
* Plotting Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates
* Map & Compass
* Bearings
* Declination
* Triangulation
MOUNTAIN BIKING
There is over 45 miles of mountain biking that takes place on a mixture of single track, double track, fire road and pavement. Parts of the course are fast and technical.
FOOT TRAVEL
Teams will travel over 12 miles on foot over single track and fire roads.
