The Silver Sage (and the shorter Silver Sage Sprint) is part of the well-regarded Big Blue Adventure Series, organized by Seventh Wave Productions. Designed for finishing times of 6 to 12 hours, the Silver Sage Adventure Race is designed for experienced racers.

The race takes place in Reno, Nevada (at the same time and place as the 2-4 hour Silver Sage Sprint). The Silver Sage features a unique “riverteering” experience through the Truckee River corridor, mountain biking on varied terrain through the High Sierra Desert and an urban adventure Reno style.

The average elevation for the event is 4,500'.

Competition is for teams of 1 to 4 people (all men, all women or coed). Team members must stay within 100 meters of each other throughout the competition. Competitors will race over land and water participating in, mountain biking, trail running and orienteering. Each team will be provided with maps, Passport and Passport instructions. All participants are required to be self-sufficient and therefore you are responsible for your hydration and nutrition. With the elevation as a factor, be assured you have enough fluids.

Competitors will travel from checkpoint to checkpoint, requiring navigation, orienteering and route finding skills. Teams are required to present their Passport to Race Officials when appropriate. Checkpoints must be acquired as noted in the Passport Instructions. There will be both manned and unmanned checkpoints.

course description

ORIENTEERING
The race provides teams with topographic maps that describe the shape of the land. They define and locate natural and manmade features (forests, creeks, rivers, canyons, buildings, bridges.) They show the distance between any two places, and they also show the direction from one point to another. Distances and directions take a bit of figuring, but the topography and features of the land are easy to determine. The topography is shown by contours. These are imaginary lines that follow the ground surface at a constant elevation; and can provide information on the natural form of the land.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
There is over 20 miles of mountain biking in forest, fire roads, single track and streets. Total elevation gain on the bike is approximately 1000 feet.

RIVER
Competitors will travel along, over, through and on the Truckee River. (Kayaking is not a discipline in this race)

FOOT TRAVEL
About 4 to 7 miles of foot travel will take place on a mix of single track, fire road and pavement, with approximately 500 feet of elevation gain.
